Surfing Basics
Surfing ("The Sport of Kings") is the sport of riding along the waves of the ocean while standing on a surfboard. Once you learn surfing basics, you will definitely enjoy the sport. Some try to learn then quit because it's not the easiest sport to learn. Many people avoid surfing because they feel uncomfortable with the ocean; however, surfing is ability to read the water and after you acquire this skill it is a real fun sport. Before you start surfing lessons hands-on, you should pay attention to the following surfing basics:
- Choosing your surfboard: Your surfboard should be generally longer in size as longer surfboards make surfing easier. Also thin boards are not good for surfing.
- Attaching leashes: Leashes are very important and should be used with boards. A big mistake that many learners do is paying attention to leashes instead of surfing. Remember that while using leashes, there is no chance of losing the board in the water and hence you can concentrate on surfing without any hesitation and fear.
- Paddling: Paddling is an art which will help you surf longer and easily even in very turbulent water. It is generally advisable to paddle wide.
- Duck diving: Duck diving is way of diving under a wave. Duck diving will ensure that you are not washed away by an oncoming wave and your efforts spent in paddling are not wasted.
- Wave breaking: Wave breaking will put you in trouble as you have to immediately act in response to wave breaking. If the wave is breaking right, you should not go in the left direction else you will increase the possibility of a collision with the oncoming wave.
If you are a beginner learning surfing basics, should not pick critical surf spots to practice. Rolling waves with deeper water is more helpful for beginners. Some people find it easier to learn in small and unpopular waves. There is no shame in learning in small waves. Once you learn the art of surfing, you can go try more radical waves. Learn how to trim the wave.
The most important surfing lesson that you can get is to respect the ocean. Before paddling out now the dangers such as riptides or sharks. Knowing these things makes you a better surfer. Also, talk to professional surfers as much as possible as they will be able to give you guidance to learn surfing basics and further improve your surfing skills.
